How long is the volunteer license valid?
The Restricted Temporary Volunteer License is valid for one year and can be renewed annually.

Can I receive reimbursement or payment for travel?
You cannot receive compensation for dental services. However, reasonable expense reimbursements (e.g., travel or lodging) may be covered by Smiles Across Montana as permitted under Montana law.

Do I need malpractice insurance?
Smiles Across Montana provides coverage for volunteers under the organization’s policy while volunteering in official SAM clinics. You may also carry your own policy for additional coverage.

Who is my supervising dentist?
Each volunteer license must list a Montana-licensed supervising dentist. Smiles Across Montana will pair you with a SAM dentist who meets this requirement and will be named in your

Where will I be volunteering?
At one or more of our mobile or school-based clinics located across Montana. Locations vary throughout the year, including rural and reservation communities, schools, and health department partnerships.

Can dental hygienists also apply?
Yes! Dental hygienists can obtain the same Restricted Temporary Volunteer License through the Montana Board of Dentistry.

We recommend submitting your application at least 6–8 weeks before your planned volunteer date to allow time for processing.
