FAQs

Where will I be volunteering?

At one or more of our mobile or school-based clinics located across Montana. Locations vary throughout the year, including rural and reservation communities, schools, and health department partnerships.

How far in advance should I apply?

We recommend submitting your application at least 6–8 weeks before your planned volunteer date to allow time for processing. You can reach out to MT Board of Dentistry to check progress.

How long is the volunteer license valid?

The Restricted Temporary Volunteer License is valid for one year and can be renewed annually.

Where will I be staying while I volunteer?

Lodging varies by outreach site. For many events, SAM coordinates local hotel accommodations or group housing for volunteers. In other cases, volunteers may choose their own lodging and receive information about nearby options. Details will be provided once your volunteer dates are confirmed.

Can dental hygienists also apply?

Absolutely! Dental hygienists can obtain the same Restricted Temporary Volunteer License through the Montana Board of Dentistry.

Who is my supervising dentist?

Each volunteer must list a SAM dentist as their supervising Montana-licensed provider. We’ll provide the name and credentials for your application.

What do I need to bring with me?

Smiles Across Montana provides all dental equipment, supplies, and PPE. You should bring: Your scrubs and closed-toe shoes, your loupes, personal protective eyewear (optional backup), driver’s license and copy of your volunteer license, any personal comfort items (e.g., snacks, jacket, phone charger)
